How to Light a Cigar the Right Way
The way you light a cigar sets the tone for the entire experience. Master the toast-and-light technique and avoid the most common beginner mistakes.
Lighting a cigar is an art. Rush it, and you'll have an uneven burn that follows you for the entire smoke. Take the time to do it properly, and the first draw will reward you instantly.
What You Need
Recommended:
- Butane torch lighter (single or double flame)
- Long wooden matches (cedar matches are traditional)
Avoid:
- Regular lighters (the petroleum smell taints the tobacco)
- Scented candles (obvious reasons)
- Paper matches (they burn unevenly and the sulfur is unpleasant)
Step 1: Toast the Foot
Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and bring the flame close to the foot — but don't let it touch. Rotate the cigar slowly, toasting the outer edge of the tobacco. You'll see it glow orange and begin to char evenly.
This step creates an even base for combustion. Rushing it causes the cigar to burn unevenly from the start.
Step 2: Draw and Light
Bring the cigar to your lips and draw gently while holding the flame 1–2cm from the foot. Keep rotating. You should see the entire foot begin to glow evenly.
Don't puff too hard — this overheats the tobacco and produces a harsh, bitter smoke.
Step 3: Check the Burn Line
Hold the lit end up and blow gently on the foot. You should see an even, orange glow all the way around. If one side is darker, apply the flame briefly to the lighter side to even it out.
Maintaining the Burn
- Don't rush. Puff every 30–60 seconds. Cigars naturally go out if neglected, which is fine.
- Don't tap ash too frequently. A solid ash actually helps regulate temperature. Let it build 1–2 inches before gently rolling it off.
- If the burn runs: apply the flame to the slow side and let it catch up before continuing.
Relighting a Cigar
If your cigar goes out, don't panic. Blow gently through the foot to clear stale smoke, then re-toast and relight. A cigar can be relit within a few hours without losing quality. After that, the stale smoke can make it harsh.
