Even a great cigar deteriorates quickly without proper storage. Here's everything you need to keep your cigars in perfect condition.

A premium cigar is a perishable product. Without proper storage, even the finest hand-rolled cigar will dry out, crack, and lose all its flavor within days. The good news? Proper storage is easier than most people think.

The Ideal Environment

Cigars thrive at:

  • Humidity: 65–70% relative humidity (RH)
  • Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C)

The classic rule is "70/70" — 70% humidity, 70°F. In practice, slightly lower humidity (65–68%) is preferred by many connoisseurs as it produces a slightly firmer ash and a cleaner burn.

Why it matters: tobacco is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture constantly. Too dry and the oils evaporate, killing flavor and causing cracking. Too wet and mold can develop, and beetles can hatch from eggs naturally present in tobacco.

The Humidor

A humidor is a box (or room) designed to maintain stable humidity. Most are made of Spanish cedar on the inside, which:

  • Absorbs and releases moisture to buffer humidity swings
  • Imparts a pleasant cedar note to the cigars over time
  • Naturally repels tobacco beetles

Setting Up a New Humidor

  1. Season the wood: place a shot glass of distilled water inside the humidor (don't let it touch the cigars). Leave it for 24–48 hours to allow the wood to absorb moisture.
  2. Calibrate your hygrometer: before trusting its readings, test it with the salt test or compare it with a known-accurate gauge.
  3. Fill your humidification device: use distilled water or a 50/50 mix of distilled water and propylene glycol solution. Never tap water — minerals clog the device.
  4. Load your cigars and check the humidity reading after 24 hours.

Budget-Friendly Alternatives

Boveda Bags / Tupperdors: A common alternative is a food-safe airtight container (Tupperware) lined with Spanish cedar, with one or two Boveda packs (humidity control packs) inside. Boveda packs maintain a precise RH level without any maintenance.

Travel humidors: small metal or plastic cases that hold 3–10 cigars. Ideal for trips or keeping a few cigars in rotation.

What to Avoid

  • Don't store cigars in the refrigerator. The temperature is too cold and the humidity is wrong. Fridges dry cigars out.
  • Don't mix very different cigars without aging time. Strong cigars can pass flavor to milder ones.
  • Don't overfill your humidor. Airflow matters — pack no more than 80% capacity.

Long-Term Storage and Aging

Many cigars improve significantly with age. This is because the oils and tobaccos continue to marry and mellow. Popular cigars for aging include full-bodied Dominican and Nicaraguan blends. Store them undisturbed at 65% RH.
